I'm planning on buying my Halloween costumes September 20ish, but that's mostly so I can have time to get used to my new costume by the time Halloween rolls around. Plus, I'm also making a horror movie, and I'll need to use the costumes. Is it weird for me to buy my costume so early?

No it isn't, it is all up to you. I am already starting my homemade Halloween costume and today is the first lol. You know you need those costumes, not only for Halloween but for a movie so there is nothing wrong with that.
